Review: City of Light by Keri Arthur

Publication Date: 1/5/2016
Series: Outcast #1
Rating: 4.5 Stars

Official Blurb:

When the bombs that stopped the species war tore holes in the veil between this world and the next, they allowed entry to the Others—demons, wraiths, and death spirits who turned the shadows into their hunting grounds. Now, a hundred years later, humans and shifters alike live in artificially lit cities designed to keep the darkness at bay....

As a déchet—a breed of humanoid super-soldiers almost eradicated by the war—Tiger has spent her life in hiding. But when she risks her life to save a little girl on the outskirts of Central City, she discovers that the child is one of many abducted in broad daylight by a wraith-like being—an impossibility with dangerous implications for everyone on earth

Because if the light is no longer enough to protect them, nowhere is safe...

City of Light was nothing what I expected this book to be.  Keri Arthur has taken a step farther into the world of Sci Fi with her newest series.  The paranormal dystopian society and world building are fantastic. The character dynamic is fascinating because of the complexity not only of the characters, but of their genetic makeup. I think is the first time since I picked up reading Sci Fi and PNR novels in the early 2000s that I have met characters that haven’t been dreamed up before. That in itself is very refreshing! With so many different versions of vampires, shifters, and werewolves on the market its hard to find something just a little bit different from the rest.  I really enjoyed the relationship dynamic between Tiger and all of the main and secondary characters, but my favorite by far would be her relationship with the ghosts. The little ones nearly broke my heart when their story was revealed.

Without giving too much away, this debut series novel is simply fantastic!! I feel as if this is the kind of book that can refresh a genre and pour life back into this kind of book.  The cliffhanger ending will nearly kill you and will leave you begging for more right now!!
