Review: Blood Kiss by J.R. Ward

Publication Date:  12/1/2015
Series: Black Dagger Legacy #1
Rating: 5 Stars

Official Blurb:

The legacy of the Black Dagger Brotherhood continues in a spin-off series from the #1 New York Times bestselling author…

Paradise, blooded daughter of the king’s First Advisor, is ready to break free from the restrictive life of an aristocratic female. Her strategy? Join the Black Dagger Brotherhood’s training center program and learn to fight for herself, think for herself…be herself. It’s a good plan, until everything goes wrong. The schooling is unfathomably difficult, the other recruits feel more like enemies than allies, and it’s very clear that the Brother in charge, Butch O’Neal, a.k.a. the Dhestroyer, is having serious problems in his own life.

And that’s before she falls in love with a fellow classmate. Craeg, a common civilian, is nothing her father would ever want for her, but everything she could ask for in a male. As an act of violence threatens to tear apart the entire program, and the erotic pull between them grows irresistible, Paradise is tested in ways she never anticipated—and left wondering whether she’s strong enough to claim her own power…on the field, and off.

As if I could love the BDB world more, in walks Blood Kiss.  Ward has created the basis of this new spin off series with her wildly acclaimed Black Dagger Brotherhood series.   While BD Legacy follows a similar story line, it doesn’t focus on the brothers. Instead, this new series focuses on the new faces on the way against the lesser.  The King brought forth an entirely new set of issues for our leather clad Brothers and escalated the fit beyond their means. They need new recruits and what better way to find the new leaders of their new army then by opening up applications.

While they knew they would get some female applicants, the brothers weren’t expecting someone so high born such as Paradise to attempt to join.  Her father is the first advisor to the King and her role in life doesn’t exactly scream leather, blood, and hand to hand combat.  She was groomed to be a gentlewoman of the Glymera and breed new high born vampires.  But, that’s not what Paradise wants. She wants to learn to fight and to train with the other recruits.  She preps herself for the try out, but what she doesn’t ready herself for is the chance to find her mate.

Craeg is far from the upper class life that Paradise leads. His entire family was killed in the raids and he wants nothing more than to seek revenge for their murders.  He’s set himself up for a life of solitude and blood, but the scribe virgin seems to have other plans for his heart.  As much as he wants to fight his pull towards Paradise, he can’t help himself.

You might notice the lack of the Brothers being mentioned so far. Never fear!!! There is side Butch and Mary story that goes along with Paradise and Craeg. Many of your favorite characters make a cameo, well except Z and that makes me sad.   Lassiter is up to his old tricks and at times his one timers and insanity had me laughing so hard I was crying.  Two words…. Selfie Stick.

To wrap this review up in a pretty little bow, I would have to say that Blood Kiss and The Black Dagger Legacy series is wrapping up to be a great addition to the BDB world.  There are so many characters that we don’t get to spend a lot of time with in the regular BDB series so adding this spin off gives us just a taste or hell even a tease of favorite brothers.  Blood Kiss is an amazing book that will make you beg for The Beast to arrive sooner than April! Bring on Hollywood!
