Review: Twisted by Elisabeth Naughton

Publication Date: 9/29/2014
Series: Eternal Guardians #7
Rating: 4 Stars

Official Blurb:

Nick Leader of the half-breeds and the last true hero. He’s spent his life fighting a dark pull toward the gods. A pull he now knows is linked to his father Krónos and the Titan’s plan to escape from the Underworld.

But Nick’s hidden powers are coveted by more than just his father. Imprisoned by Hades, Nick battles every form of torture imaginable as the sadistic god schemes to break him. Only one thing is keeping him sane. One woman who gives him the strength to fight the relentless darkness. She has a dangerous plan of her own, though, and as Nick’s powers grow stronger, even she might not be enough to alter his destiny.

As the fate of the world hangs in the balance, Nick’s allegiances are tested. And no one knows whether he will choose to fight for good or succumb to the sinister lure of evil. Not even him

Like many reviewers and fans of this series, I jumped for joy when I realized we were finally getting Nick’s story! Nick is such a different character when it comes to our beloved Argonaut warriors. His life has never truly been easy. He was banished because of his status as a misos (half human half Argonaut).  Because of the treatment he received as a child, he vows to protect the misos population and serves as their unofficial leader.

Nick’s love life isn’t any better. Eons before the Argonauts were cursed by Hera to have one single love.  A soul mate that would be their exact opposite thanks to Hera’s twisted sense of humor. After his twin Argonaut brother, Demetrious, finds his one and only true love and soul mate is Queen Isadora, Nick realizes that she is also his soul mate.  Demetrius may not be his full brother (they shared a womb, but had different fathers) Nick knows he cannot overstep his bounds because his new sister in law/soul mate is carrying his brother’s child and a future ruler of their land.

Oh, and did I mention that Nick’s true father is Kronos, father of Zeus, himself? Nick’s not the last true non-god descent of Kronos. In his blood and soul lies the power and the keys to release Kronos from his prison.  Because he cannot have his soul mate, Nick sacrifices himself to that Isadora can live in happiness and peace with his brother and their child. His time in Hades is filled with torture and twisted dark treachery at the hands of Hades’ son and his slave Cynna.

Yet, Cynna herself has been hiding a secret of her own that causes her to cast away her mortal freedom to live in the depths of Hades. She knows after watching Nick’s torture and being one of the people ordered to torture him that she cannot watch it any longer. Yet, back in their normal world, Nick faces another challenge. Isadora’s health is failing because Nick’s been away. Nick is faced with a very hard decision to sacrifice himself to save the Queen and her sisters in the process or sacrifice the one person he’s found a semblance of happiness with... Cynna.

Twisted definitely lives us to its name. Just as you think you’ve solved the latest puzzle in the land of the Eternal Guardians, Naughton hits you with a 1-2 punch combination that leaves your head spinning. I think out of all the books (Demetrius is highly my favorite) that Nick’s story comes in a very close second. Naughton has sidestepped her traditional views of finding your soul mate and adding much unexpected twists to Nick’s soul mate story. She showcases how finding true love can sometimes trump the feelings you may have for a fated soul mate. Fate has dealt him a very shitty hand of cards when it comes to his life as misos, a son of Kronos, and soul mated to his own sister in law.  Yet, this marvelous author has managed to make huge leaps and bounds of his happiness in his world of utter Chaos. Having never read this series before being gifted a copy of Twisted from Netgalley, I will admit... I binge read all 7 books in an entire weekend. This series was way worth the fact I boycotted study for my grad school class to read it in its entirety. I couldn’t put it down nor sleep until I knew the outcome of this final story.
