Review: Break Out by Nina Croft

Publication Date: 12/30/2013
Series: Blood Hunter #1
Rating: 4 stars

Official Blurb:

The year is 3048, Earth is no longer habitable, and man has fled to the stars where they’ve discovered the secret of immortality—Meridian. Unfortunately, the radioactive mineral is exorbitantly expensive and only available to a select few. A new class comprised of the super rich and immortal soon evolves. The Collective, as they’re called, rule the universe.

Two-thousand-year-old Ricardo Sanchez, vampire and rogue pilot of the space cruiser, El Cazador, can’t resist two things: gorgeous women and impossible jobs. When beautiful Skylar Rossaria approaches him to break a prisoner out of the Collective’s maximum security prison on Trakis One, Rico jumps at the chance. Being hunted by the Collective has never been so dangerous–or so fun!

Welcome abroad the crazy space train! Earth is abandoned and the endless black above us is now home. A new element has given the rich and privileged a new lease on life. These immortals called the Collective run the galactic world. But, they’re not the only enhanced beings in this new world. Vampires and genetically modified humans/hybrids roam the galaxy. These hybrids and GMs are not only being hunted by The Collective, but a group of religious radicals.

Enter Rico, a 15th century vampire who is a ruthless mercenary and sex addict. Sex drives the hunger away for him so he is also on the prowl for new midnight snack. His snacking habits get him into trouble when a beautiful woman seeks to employ their services. Her story is too good to be true, but his other brain thinks she’s just peachy. Skylar needs them to help her break out a maximum security prisoner from this worlds Alcatraz. Rico knows there’s more than meets the eye when it comes to Skylar, but he wants her in his bed so badly he may just risk it all to have her.

Break Out is so far out of my usual genre. I love SyFy, but I’ve never gotten into PNR/ UF set in space. This is a first of its kind for me… and I LOVED IT! The world is so vastly different than what I’m used to reading about and it’s so damn refreshing. The technology that we currently have in our own modern day makes it seem that a world like Rico and Skylar’s could be possible in the distant future. Both characters internal battles about each other are what really sucked me into the book. They both have a mutual attraction yet are cautious of the other because they know that this isn’t some rescue mission. If you take Star Trek add in a sexy as hell vampire, you’ve got Break Out! I cannot wait for the next book.
