Review: Wild Country by Anne Bishop

Publication Date: 3/5/2019
Series: The World of Others #2
Rating: 4.5 Stars

Official Blurb:

There are ghost towns in the world—places where the humans were annihilated in retaliation for the slaughter of the shape-shifting Others.

One of those places is Bennett, a town at the northern end of the Elder Hills—a town surrounded by the wild country. Now efforts are being made to resettle Bennett as a community where humans and Others live and work together. A young female police officer has been hired as the deputy to a Wolfgard sheriff. A deadly type of Other wants to run a human-style saloon. And a couple with four foster children—one of whom is a blood prophet—hope to find acceptance.

But as they reopen the stores and the professional offices and start to make lives for themselves, the town of Bennett attracts the attention of other humans looking for profit. And the arrival of the Blackstone Clan, outlaws and gamblers all, will uncover secrets…or bury them.

How do you accurately describe a book that leaves you utterly and unequivocally satisfied from beginning to end? There are no “right” set of words to convey that. Wild Country gives readers a taste of the previous series and a great grasp on live post Meg/Simon.  It delivers everything that readers of this series would want in a new story with new characters. A great plot, richly developed characters, and the teases of old favorites. It is a masterful weave of suspense in a diverse world of characters.  My only hope is that there is more to come in the future.

Review: How to Live an Undead Lie by Hailey Edward

Publication Date: 12/11/2018
Series: The Beginner’s Guide to Necromancy #5
Rating: 5 Stars

Official Blurb:

When a fledgling vampire arrives at Woolworth House searching for his maker, Grier is forced to relive her time in Atramentous. Most of those years are as dark and empty in her memory as she was in her cell. She can't remember her progeny, or the night she resuscitated him, but she can protect him from the Society. As long as she's willing to barter with her grandfather to do it.

But Lacroix has plans of his own. He envisions the city--her city--under his rule, and Grier under his thumb. Now all he needs is the right leverage to force her cooperation, and he has just the person in mind. Grier is ready to trade her freedom until a grim truth is revealed that splits her heart in two. Yet another person she loves has betrayed her, and Grier is left agonizing over how much of their relationship is real and how much was a lie.

Dead. Just completely dead right now with this story. In a good way of course.

Grier has…

a vampy  grandfather that wants to claim her.
a maternal family that wants nothing to do with her, but can’t seem to leave her alone.
an ex that is still in love with her despite being engaged.
a childhood friend and teacher  who is becoming more.

More secrets than Heinz has ketchup.

Remember that cup I mentioned running over? Girl must have an entire river out of its banks with this story. There is so much to this story that it would take days to write out all my feelings  about this epic addition to the series. Instead, I just want to briefly and quickly touch on the highlights.

Her grandfather. Dude is bad, bad business and has his sights firmly attached to his grand-daughter’s life. When she refuses him, the necromancy world goes up in smoke and in a hurry.

Boaz. This guy needs a swift kick to the pants when he charges in to save the day and berate Grier for her romantic ties with Linus.  I give kudos to her for standing up to him and reminding him that he could have had that kind of life with her, albeit one not as grand as her life with Linus, had he made better decisions. Thought, I will admit his fiancé seems to be the kind of woman who won’t take crap off of him. Bully for her.

Linus. Ahhhhhh. The best part of the entire series.  I can’t reveal just exactly where the turn in their relationship takes place or the major reveal at the end of the story, but I will say this. I FLIPPING LOVE IT.

Now… where’s book #6? Because I need it. Like Grier needs Churros.

“Can I get your number?” he asks, catching my elbow to halt me and then letting it go just as fast.
I still for a moment then look back and shake my head. “I don’t think that’s a good idea.”
He faintly tilts his head and studies me for a moment. The crystal blue of his eyes bore into me, breaking his stare I look over at Louise and Cami.
“Charlotte,” he implores in his rich whiskey voice. I move my gaze back to him, shaking my head. “How long are you in town for?”
“I’m here to stay,” I reply softly.
A hint of a smile quirks on his lips. “Maybe we will run into each other again then.”
“Perhaps,” I offer. “If we are meant to be friends, I’m sure the stars will align and we will meet again.” I was channeling my inner Louise with that line of rubbish. I have to bite the inside of my lower lip to keep myself from smiling.
“You are very intriguing, Charlotte.”
My name on his lips gives me pause, but I force myself to finish our goodbye. It’s for the best. This is the first day of my exciting new life, the last thing I want or need is to get tangled up in a messy break up. “I’ll catch you later,” I say with finality. Turning to walk away, I try to make a smooth departure but trip on air. One second I’m falling and the next I’m caught around my waist and lifted back up to my feet. I don’t even have a second to process what happened before he speaks.
“Careful, kitten,” he murmurs close to my ear. “You’ll hurt yourself.”
I shiver, goose bumps ripple down my arms. I turn around to look at him and our faces are too close for comfort. I take a step back so that I can breathe. “Thank you, I’m not usually so clumsy.”
“It was my pleasure…What’s your last name?”
I wonder for a moment if I want to give him that information, but then it comes unbidden from my lips. “Rose.”
“Charlotte Rose.” He takes my hand, bending down to kiss my knuckles. “Until we meet again,” he says softly, and then he turns and walks away.

There’s a fine line between lust and hate.

Five years ago, she was stolen from me.
But now I’m back from the dead to reclaim what’s mine.
Here comes the bride.
Again, and again, and again…

What a woman like Juliana ever saw in a dirty roughneck Marine like me I’ll never understand. But I’m a man who knows what he wants, and I wanted her. I stole her heart, made her my wife, and saw the rest of my life with her.

…And then, I died.

At least, that’s what the man who left me for dead told her while I sat in chains, forgotten in a Taliban prison for five damn years.

Five years in a pit in the desert does something to a man. It’s made me hardened, feral, and wild. It’s made me hungryfor the one woman I ever wanted, and driven to the brink of madness to have her soft curves in my rough hands again. Five years in hell have made me ready to move heaven and earth to get my bride back in my arms.

My enemy tried to bury me and take what’s mine. Except, he didn’t dig deep enough. Because I just broke out of my prison, and now?

Now I’m coming back to reclaim what’s mine.

Five years ago, Juliana thought she lost me. A week ago, I came back from the dead. Tonight, I’m stealing her back.

‘Til death do us part?

Oh, it’s going to take a lot more than that…

Excerpt

“What are you doing out here?” he asked softly.
“Exactly what it looks like,” I said. I sounded a little more curt than I had intended, so I softened my voice. “I’m photographing the trees in the park. I just didn’t realize you were so…so near.”
My face heated up. His eyes bore into me as I said these last two words, and for a moment, his guarded look faltered. “I meant what are you doing out here, alone again at four in the morning?”
“It’s when the light is best,” I said with a twinge of irritation. Why was I explaining myself to this man? I put a hand on my hip and, with a hint of sass, added, “What are you doing out here?”
He ignored my question. “It’s not safe to be out here by yourself.”
I raised my eyebrows, bristling at his stark tone and the implication that he, practically a stranger, was the authority on what was best for me. And he was implying that I wasn’t safe out here when he himself was, in fact, out here alone as well. After all the talk about pro-gender-equity men in Sweden, how had I managed to find a neighbor who hadn’t gotten the message? I sighed.
“I have pepper spray,” I said, digging in my pocket until I pulled it out.
“Not sure that stuff is legal here in Sweden,” he said, raising an eyebrow. “Besides, you weren’t ready to use it.”
“I would have been if there was real danger.” I knew my answer sounded childish before the words even left my mouth, but I said it anyway.

Much to my increasing irritation, he gave a dry laugh.
“Fine,” he said. “Then spray me. Right now.”
I frowned. “You don’t want me to do that. It’ll burn your eyes. Badly.”
“That reasoning is why the pepper spray won’t help you,” he said, the amusement still on his face. “You have to be willing to use it.”
He was goading me, I could feel it, but it was working. My hand twitched around the canister.
“Fine,” I said and reached to pull the cap off the spray.
But before I even touched it, he grabbed both of my hands together with one of his. He used the other to turn me around and hold me against his solid chest. My pepper spray dropped to the ground. I gasped, my mind trying to process the sensation of my back against the warmth of his hard muscles. I stopped breathing. His large arm held me firmly against him, and my heart frantically pounded inside my chest. I looked down at the scarred knuckles of the hand that was easily holding both of mine.
Before my mind had fully registered all these details, his grip softened. Gently, he turned me back around by my waist so I was facing him, but he didn’t release me right away. I wasn’t sure where to look. At the broad, solid chest only inches away? At the tense muscles of his arms? I drew in my first, shaky breath in too long. I tilted my head up and found Niklas’s eyes fixed on mine.
“It’s not safe to wander around alone at night, even if it’s light out,” he said softly.
