Review: Malevolent by Cassia Brightmore

Publication Date: February 28, 2015

Series: Book 1
Rating: 5 Stars for Nikki and 4 Stars for Lauren

Official Blurb: Darkness has a seductive power, a delicious energy that sinks its claws in deep. Once the devil has a hold of you, true malevolence is born.

Sheriff Brady James has sworn to protect the small town of Durham Heights, his current priority to ruthlessly hunt a sadistic killer on the loose. With lives at stake, his focus is split between two beautiful women - one dark, one light. The clock is ticking, the threat palpable; crawling closer at every turn. Once death has you in its sights, there is no escape.

Pain. Suffering. Lives shattered and broken. In the fight of good against evil, who will survive?

This is the first book in the Darkness series, a wishing evil upon others novel that can be read as a standalone.

You know when you are reading a book and you are so sucked in you actually think you are living inside the book… THIS IS THAT BOOK!! I honestly was in complete shock from the very first page. My emotions were literally all over the place. Just be prepared even though this book does have some good parts it is also very dark. Some can’t handle dark… me on the other hand I love it and this book is right up there with my top favorite dark reads.

It’s so hard to explain this book because I don’t want to give away any spoilers. This is a book that will literally keep you guessing and then second-guessing until the last page. This book is told through multiple people’s POVs. Some of these characters are main characters while others are not. But believe me each person’s POV left an imprint on my heart. There were times that I cringed, screamed, yelled and was completely in shock!! If you love dark thrillers that leave your mouth hanging open … this is definitely the book for you!!! LOVED THIS!!

Malevolent is a very different kind of book for me as a reader. It’s dark and twisted nature is not my usual cup of tea, but I decided to take the chance on Cassia’s debut novel. After finishing it, I’ll admit I have mixed feelings about this book. While the story is very original and engaging, I had issues with the story development surrounding Gwyn’s romance with the local sheriff. I won’t exactly dive into the details that drove me a little batty out of respect for others readers. I will simply say that I felt that part of the story was a bit rushed. Sheriff Brady is the ideal hero of the story. He’s the kind of man you envision riding down the street on a white horse coming to rescue you.  Cassia writes like a seasoned author. I can’t wait to see what happens next!
