Guest Review: Broken Course by Aly Martinez

Publication Date: 11/10/14
Series: Wrecked and Ruined #3

***Blurb***

Seven years ago, my life changed forever. One accident and the person I saw in the mirror no longer resembled the woman I used to be. I was lost and confused inside my own body. I felt alone and disconnected from the world, carrying the incredible weight of guilt and loss that wasn't even mine to harbor.

Then fate led me to Leo James. He taught me that crazy could be perfectly normal and it shouldn't hurt to breathe. Don't get me wrong. Leo isn't perfect. He has his own cross to bear, and the truth is, that might be why I fell for him in the first place. But despite everything he does for me, learning to forgive myself is infinitely harder than overlooking the flaws of another.

Now, the secrets and lies of our past have begun to dictate our future—threatening to ruin us before we get the chance to try. Perhaps we were cursed from the start. Or maybe, just maybe, the remnants of our fractured lives will fit together to form one whole, where love isn’t questioned and being happy is…well, easy.

Can a second broken soul be enough to fill the voids of my own? Or will such scarred pasts prove too much for our love alone to overcome?

***I was given an ARC of Broken Course in exchange for an honest review***
I give this book 6 stars out of 5!

Broken Course had me hooked from the first word. There was never even a second that I lost interest. Not one. The way that Aly Martinez integrated all of her previous books (including one from another series) and tied them all together is phenomenal. With every book I think to myself, “There is no way she can get better. She’s already the best. “With every book, Aly has proved me wrong.

Broken Course is a whirlwind of emotions; I went from hatred to love to sorrow to happiness. Every. Single. Chapter. I have emotional whiplash. I normally can recover from a book and be ready to go on to a new one the next day. This one does NOT follow that rule. Also, I have never known a book to have a title so perfect for the story.

Another way that Aly Martinez proved me wrong was that within Broken Course, there were so many surprises and plot twists thrown in; I never knew what was going to happen next. I have seen other authors try to accomplish this feat only to have it come back and bite them in the butt. It usually makes a story feel crazy over-the-top fake and cheesy as well as forced. It often times can and will completely destroy a book. Does it with Broken Course? No way! Each twist and turn leads the story down a new, more exciting path.

The character development throughout Broken Course is unparalleled. To see Sarah go from antihero to heroine was something I never thought would be possible. Again, another example of how Aly proved me wrong. Sarah’s growth from Changing Course and Stolen Course is inspiring. It shows that through hard work and dedication, even the most broken person can overcome adversity and come out on top. Leo is also a tortured soul, emerging from the depths of hell, which readers were first introduced to in Among the Echoes (which is the beginning of a different series). Leo has a harder time facing the emotional work that needs to be done because, let’s face it, men don’t handle emotions well.  To see the character interactions and the growth of their relationships is incredible. It was fun seeing Emma and Caleb, Erica and Slate, and even Brett and Jesse make appearances in the book regardless of how large or small of a role they have.

I cannot wait to see what Aly has in store for us next! Aly Martinez: you are an evil, evil genius and I absolutely LOVE Broken Course. Okay, enough typing, I’m going in for round 2! If you read this book and enjoy it even a fraction of how much I do, you’re going to love it!
