Jase Kayrs was the fun brother. The warm, charming, easy-going brother of the vampire leaders. Until he was taken and tortured by demons with their evil mind tricks for nearly five years. Upon his return, he’s dark, violent, and not the man they all thought they knew. Not the man he once was. He’s haunted that the only reason the demons would have let him live was to use him as a weapon against his family—but he can’t figure out when or how he’ll explode. Plus, once again the demons are after Jase with a vengeance…or rather, a female demon he rejected is out to destroy him.

Then the king asks Jase for a favor…a big one. To mate with one of their allies in order to save her. She’s everything that’s good and light in the world…while he’s at home with darkness. Yet he agrees…knowing mating may be the only chance to save them both.

As I’ve read the Dark Protectors, I have had a range of emotions about this series. I borderline hated the first book, but I wasn’t willing to give up this highly touted series just yet. With each book, this series as gotten better and better. The subject of this review, Shadowed, is proof of the evolution of this series, which was once dominated by male vampires claiming their sometimes unwilling mates.

Shadowed follows our missing in action brother, Jase. Once the fun loving, wild brother who excelled at all the skills his brothers have individually mastered, Jase is a broken man. He was held captive by the demons for five long years. While in captivity, a rare female demon tries to convince him to mate her and goes so far as to even try to bribe him to do so. But, once he’s finally rescued, he’s an empty shell of rage and hatred. The one silver living that kept him going during captivity was a painting by Brenna.

Our dear Brenna has problems of her own. It is unheard of for a 7th sister witch to give birth to an 8th daughter, which often leads to Brenna being branded as a freak. She now holds a seat on the witch council, thanks to Moira, which does not help the matter. Brenna was captured and poisoned with a rare mineral that affects only witched. Her captor poured a liquid version of this mineral down her throat and she’s been fighting the affects of it for 10 years. She knows she’s dying, but the other witches have come up with a plan, an arranged mating to a Karys. Jase volunteers for the duty. Not only does she have to contend with her looming death on the horizon, but also a prophecy about an 8th daughter during a celestial event. A circle of witches known as CRAP (I about DIED laughing!!) want her dead to stop the prophecy while another group of men want to mate her and “save her”. Poor Brenna just can’t catch a break!

While not open to it at first, Brenna and Jase eventually do mate. I was hoping for this pairing ever since her introduction in Conn’s book. Her fun spirit and good natured help Jase smooth over his broken, rough edges. They work well together as mates. Their mating does ultimately help save Brenna and also gives them a possible way to cure the mate virus because of the celestial event she’s destined to be a part of.

This book was the most action packed of the series. Rebecca has really stepped up her game with this book. I greatly look forward to the newest edition of the Dark Protectors Series, Tamed, being released on 5/15/2014.
