Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux knows she is the best- but she does not know if even she is good enough for this job. Hired by the dangerously beautiful archangel Raphael, a being so lethal that no mortal wants his attention, Elena knows failure is not an option—even if the task is impossible.
Because this time, it's not a wayward vamp she has to track. It's an archangel gone bad.
The job will put Elena in the midst of a killing spree like no other—and pull her to the razor's edge of passion. Even if the hunt does not destroy her, succumbing to Raphael’s seductive touch just might. For when archangels play, mortals break.
This is the first time I’ve ever reviewed a set of books in a single post, but this series has had me hooked to the point of forgetting about life outside of reading. I haven’t been able to put down these books. Yet as soon as I do finish one, I can’t help but start the next one. Where do I even begin?
Elena Deveraux works for the Guild Hunters. She’s a glorified vampire hunter. Her unique and enhanced ability to scent a vampire comes from the fact she’s hunterborn. She comes from a horrible back ground. Her sisters were killed when a vampire came hunting for her because of her hunter blood. Her mother commits suicide soon after her sisters’ murders. Estranged from her father, Elena as mostly been on her own and has made the Guild her real family. Elena is the best hunter the guild has and when a fearsome archangel requests her assistance on a case, she can’t say no.
The bastard kissed her. She was so mad, she bit him hard enough to draw blood. Raphael pulled back, lip already beginning to swell. “We are no longer even, Elena. You’re now in debt.”
“You can deduct it from my slow and painful death.” She dropped her leg from his waist. “It’s time to talk murder.”"
Raphael is the Archangel of New York. He’s powerful, dark, and sexy as hell. He almost instantly wants Elena for his own when he first meets her. Elena scoffs at his advances at first even and goes as far as shooting him in his wings to get away. Elena is his weakness and soon she realizes that she has those same feelings as well. Raphael and Elena do become a couple, but not before she’s mortally wounded. Instead of allowing Elena to die, Raphael realizes he cannot live without her and decides he too will die. With his decision, he awakes a long time myth of the angels. Upon his decision to die and the fact Elena is true love, Raphael is able to not only save her, but turn her into an angel as well. The recovery is long, but she survives.
"I’m crazy about you, Archangel. You scare the shit out of me at times, but I want to dance with you anyway."
Raphael’s second in command Dmitri while having disdain for Elena is sworn to protect her. Dmitri is fascinated with her and when that fascination does to too far, Elena slits his throat. Being a vampire, Dmitri survives, but not until later books does his disdain for her soften.
The second and third book of this series showcases Elena’s struggle to learn the way of being an angel and strengthening her new body. New angels are very weak and are often secluded away until they are strong enough to survive on their own in the Refuge. Elena is trained by a collection of Raphael’s Seven, his body guards. They face dangers from the other archangels looking to harm Elena in both of the next books. However, the action isn’t what makes these next two books amazing. The struggle that Elena and Raphael have of getting to a comfortable place in their relationship that will allow both of them to have the lives they previously lead is the overlying theme. Raphael wants only to keep Elena safe, but she feels compelled to continue her work as a hunter. They do figure things out and both make compromises to aid the other’s needs. Archangel’s Consort also brings in the twist that Raphael’s crazy pants mother is still alive. She plans a huge role in the 3rd book and her awaken from sleep causes all kinds of chaos with the other archangels.
Archangel’s Blade follows Dmitri’s back story and his road to redemption. While, I found that the story outside of Elena and Raphael didn’t hold my attention as the three previous books did, I did love this book. Dmitri’s vampiric turning past was also hinted at in the last books, but never really explained. He’s a very dark, unloving vampire, but in AB it’s explained. His wife and children were killed by his maker. He refused her and was forced into vampirism by her. Dmitri is assigned to work with a guild hunter named Honor.
“I’m going to do things to you now that a good girl definitely shouldn’t let a man do to her.”
Honor was held captive by vampires for 6 weeks. During her captivity, she was used for her blood and her body by a myriad of vampires. She recovers and wants revenge. When strange vampire murders begin to appear, she’s assigned to work with Dmitri. She’s almost instantaneously attracted to him, but because of her past experiences with vampires, she can’t let herself get into a relationship with one. Yet, when she starts having dreams about his past, she realizes that she can’t fight getting to know him better. They’ve both had abusive pasts and as they grow in their trust, open up and share to each other things that no one else knows. When the vampire murders turn out to be the same people who captured and abused Honor, they both seek revenge for what she experienced. Dmitri begins to realize that he’s never felt the way he does about Honor since the death of his mortal wife. While again, they do end up together, the biggest twist had me shell-shocked. I began to suspect it with her dreams of his past, but as it turns out, she’s his wife reincarnated.
