Review: Archangel's Legion by Nalini Singh
Series: Guild Hunters
Rating: 4 stars
Angels are falling from the sky in New York, struck down by a vicious, unknown force.
Vampires are dying impossibly of disease.
Guild hunter Elena Deveraux and the Archangel Raphael must discover the source of the wave of death before it engulfs their city and their people, leaving New York a ruin and Raphael’s Tower under siege by enemy archangels.
Yet even as they fight desperately to save the city, an even darker force is stirring, its chill eyes trained on New York…and on Raphael. Rivers of crimson and nightmares given flesh, the world will never again be the same…
Let me put this simply... I LOVED this book! Singh goes back to the roots of her guild hunter story, Raphael and Elena. While I loved Dmitri and Jason's stories in the previous two books, I was very much excited that we got back to the heart of the story. They've been background stories for too long in my opinion. Their life together still has its ups and downs as they struggle to keep their individual identities. One aspect of this story I loved was the introduction of Tasha, a former warrior and lover of Raphael. Elena's claws came out and I loved her even more for putting Tasha in her place. It seems so many people in their world want to tear them apart and I for one am glad to see her stand her ground about their relationship. Elena knows that at any moment someone will try to separate them and her ability to sense ulterior motives has improved as well as her strength in combat and flight. Elena has a passion for life and will do whatever is necessary to protect those she loves, which is one of the aspects of her personality that makes her perfect for Raphael.
Another aspect I enjoyed was the multiple ways Singh introduces turmoil into their lives. While the vampire virus itself was a scary notion to tackle, Raphael's sudden new powers and strengths hit the top of the list. Raphael changes both in strength and personality when these Cascade power surges strike New York and Elena brings him back to Earth. It shows that not only does she love him, but she will not let him go into the madness that affected his parents and scares him.
“We fall, we fall together.”
The only part of this book that caused it to not be 4 stars was the actual squabbling between Raphael and Elena. I thought at this point in the book series that they'd be over these issues, but they're not. While, it does bring in some GREAT makeup sex in the book, it feels a tad over played. There is plenty of other drama going on in their world for their personal drama to continue book after book. Elena takes off angry at Raphael and flies to a point that nearly destroy her wings for a second time. However, she did redeem herself when she decided to go "inactive" at the guild to be there to fight for Raphael and her city. I also really enjoyed getting to know a little more about Aodhan, Illiam, and Naasir, members of Raphael's Seven.
I am greatly looking forward to the next installment of Guild Hunters, entitled " Archangel's Shadow, set to release on 10/28/2014. Official blurbs for this new book indicate that it will heavily feature Ash and Janvier's Story.
