Review: Locke by Harper Sloan

Rating: 5 Stars

Official Blurb:

Darkness is the only thing I see. Ever since the day my life changed. The day that everything and everyone I held close to me ceased to exist. The day I lost it all and the demons of my past consumed my every waking moment.

I tried to keep others at arm’s length. Tried not to let my darkness taint them. Ruin them. Harm them. And whether I want to admit it or not, as much as I wish I could keep them locked out, they refuse to leave. Refuse to let me suffer alone.

If I hadn’t been so focused on keeping those demons from flying free, I wouldn’t have missed how one perfect angel was able to sneak her way under my skin—refusing to let go. Making me want things I don’t deserve.

She consumes me. Her beauty knows no end. The love she promises tempts me every time she’s near. But that pure heart that makes her MY Emmy is the one thing I’m convinced I’ll destroy if I ever let her close.

I’m a broken man. A broken man with too much darkness in his soul to ever let her light shine upon me. But even that doesn’t stop me from craving her with every single breath in my body.

**This is the final book in the Corps Security series. This book is not suitable for younger readers. There is strong language, adult situations, and some violence.*

I have been patiently waiting for Maddox Locke’s book and please believe Mad is my absolute favorite character by far!!!! Mad had me pulled in from the other books with his mysterious ways and how he would want everyone else happy but never himself. Until Emmy walks into his life. I adore Emmy!!!! She had a rough start to life and I hated the things this poor girl had to go through. I also hated to see the pain Maddox had to go through as well. Once you find out his whole entire story you completely understand why he is the way he is. It broke my heart to see his family treat him with such disrespect. But when he finally gave into Emmy it was absolutely beautiful. These two built each other back up from day one and Emmy helped Mad to understand the kind of man her really was. Fantastic job Harper on all the books. I enjoyed every single one but I officially claim Maddox!!

Nikki's Best Book of 2014: Archer’s Voice by Mia Sheridan

Publication Date: January 25, 2014
Rating: 5 Stars

Official Blurb:

When Bree Prescott arrives in the sleepy, lakeside town of Pelion, Maine, she hopes against hope that this is the place where she will finally find the peace she so desperately seeks. On her first day there, her life collides with Archer Hale, an isolated man who holds a secret agony of his own. A man no one else sees.

Archer's Voice is the story of a woman chained to the memory of one horrifying night and the man whose love is the key to her freedom. It is the story of a silent man who lives with an excruciating wound and the woman who helps him find his voice. It is the story of suffering, fate, and the transformative power of love.

THIS IS A STAND-ALONE SIGN OF LOVE NOVEL, INSPIRED BY SAGITTARIUS. New Adult Contemporary Romance: Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

For the end of the year our blog decided to do a book that stood out the most to us in 2014. We each had to pick just one book and this choice came very easy to me. There were many books I read throughout 2014 but the book that stuck with me the most was Archer’s Voice by Mia Sheridan. I don’t think I have ever read a book that brought out so much emotion. I think this will always be a book that sticks with me it’s just that touching.

When the book starts out we get a short glimpse of Archer’s POV and then it goes straight to Bree. Bree moves to Pelion, Maine trying to run from her past that she can’t seem to escape. I felt bad for Bree for the loss that she suffered. The first time she meets Archer she is drawn to him and has this slight obsession with getting to know him. Almost everyone in town is rude to Archer and thinks he is deaf and not all right in the head. When Bree spends just 5 minutes with Archer she knows right away there is nothing wrong with him. Yes Archer is mute and can’t talk but he can write and also knows sign language. Bree also knows sign language so it’s like fate stepped in and brought these two together.

What melted my heart so much in this book is how everyone else never took the time to help Archer or get to know him and they all gave up on him really and he was completely alone but Bree was there for him really from day one of her moving to town. Yes these two struggled just like every other couple but the compassion between these two was absolutely breathtaking. One of my favorite parts of this book is when Bree and Archer told each other they loved each other for the first time. I had tears streaming down my face because I could literally feel Archer’s heart being unbroken by the years of damage he had been through. It’s so hard to put this book into words because it’s a book that sticks with you forever and also leaves you speechless after. I laughed, cried, got angry, screamed, and fell in love with these two along their journey. As soon as I finished this book on kindle I immediately contacted Mia and bought a signed copy for my bookshelf because this book means a lot to me. You never know the struggles someone goes through in life and just one small act of kindness by Bree to Archer blossomed into a heartwarming love story that will forever stay with me.

This is a book I recommended to everyone I can and I don’t know if there will ever be another book that measure up to this one.

Review: Cooper by Harper Sloan

Series and Book Number: 4
Rating: 5 Stars

Official Blurb:

Do you take me seriously? Because I don’t. I use my jokes and easygoing personality to hide the pain I’ve felt since he took his last breath. I’m adrift without my partner in crime, my best friend…my brother. I can taste the vengeance just within my grasp.

Until she barges into my life. Promising me happiness and a peace I’ve been craving for years. She is the sun to my darkness, the happy to my despair.

But she holds secrets. Just like I do. She holds hers close, where I just pray mine don’t rock the walls we’re trying to build.

Now I’m stuck at a crossroads between my desire for revenge and my craving for her and the life we could have together—and I have no idea which road I should travel.

All I know with crystal clear certainty is that the past has the power to destroy it all.

*No cliffhanger* *This book is not suitable for younger readers. There is strong language, adult situations, and some violence.*

It’s so hard for me to write a review on this book. This book picked up right from Beck and the tears once again started rolling down my face. I thought the book would be about Zeke but it definitely was not and it was about his brother Asher. Also the main girl in the book is Chelcie. I loved this girl so much. She was so strong and such a fighter. I also really liked Asher too once he got his head out of his butt. These two were such a beautiful couple and both overcame a lot in this book. My review isn’t going to be very long because I hate to write spoilers. But this book will take you on a very emotional roller coaster ride. I am so looking forward to Locke’s book NOW!

Review: Beck by Harper Sloan

Publication Date: December 23, 2013
Series and Book Number: 3

Official Blurb:

**Warning** This book is intended for a mature reading**

I’ve always been good at wearing masks. Not letting anyone see the real me. I’m content being the happy-go-lucky best friend. The strong willed boss. The independent woman who doesn’t need a man.

But the truth is I’m just as broken as the rest of you. I’m terrified that all it will take is one person to make all my carefully constructed walls crumble into fine dust. So I guard my heart with everything I have. Determined to never let anyone get close enough to hurt me again.

All is perfect until HE walks into my life. No… he doesn’t just walk. He struts his good-looking, sex-oozing self right into my space and demands that I see HIM. Making me want what I know I can’t have.

So I did the only thing I know how to do.
I run.
But he just won’t let me go.

The second I see her, I know she will be mine. I see past the gorgeous smiles and heart-stopping laughter. I see HER. She doesn’t want me to know her secrets or the past that haunts her, but I make it my mission to find out.

To make her mine.

She can run all she wants, but it will never be far enough to stop me from coming after her.
She’s it for me and she knows it.
She’s just too scared to admit it.

**NO cliffhanger, HEA, inter-connected standalones**

I was very excited to read this book. I was sucked in by Beck and Dee from the first two books so I was ready for their story. I felt so bad for Dee. She had a rough start and her parents were absolutely horrible. Also the secrets she was holding from Izzy were heart breaking. My heart so bad for Dee and no one really noticed. She needed her two best friends and they were pre occupied with their own lives. But Beck was always there for her. Beck is the sweetest one of these corps men. I just love him to pieces. Everyone thought Beck and Dee’s relationship was always back and forth when really Dee was struggling with her life and Beck was there every step of the way. Once Beck and Dee decided to try and be together other drama came into play with Dee’s job. I loved to watch the relationship between Dee and Beck grow. Towards the end of this book had me in absolute shock and in tears!!! I literally cried for almost an hour. HEARTBREAKING but it sets up for the next book and I can’t wait to get started.

Cherry's Best Book of 2014 End of the Year Review: Making Faces by Amy Harmon

Publication Date: 10-20-13
Rating: 6 Bloody Fabulous Cherries!

Ambrose Young was beautiful. He was tall and muscular, with hair that touched his shoulders and eyes that burned right through you. The kind of beautiful that graced the covers of romance novels, and Fern Taylor would know. She'd been reading them since she was thirteen. But maybe because he was so beautiful he was never someone Fern thought she could have...until he wasn't beautiful anymore.

Making Faces is the story of a small town where five young men go off to war, and only one comes back. It is the story of loss. Collective loss, individual loss, loss of beauty, loss of life, loss of identity. It is the tale of one girl's love for a broken boy, and a wounded warrior's love for an unremarkable girl. This is a story of friendship that overcomes heartache, heroism that defies the common definitions, and a modern tale of Beauty and the Beast, where we discover that there is a little beauty and a little beast in all of us.

This is an extra special, year end review of MY absolute favorite read of 2014.

If you are like me you read a lot of books and love each and every one of them in their own special way. But I can be honest and say that there are some books that just stay with you longer than others.

Making Faces my friends, is one of those books. Read early in the year, I have recommended this book more than I have recommended about any other book I have ever read!  This story resonated with me on so many levels.  I will explain more as we move through this review, but first a little history of me.  September 11, 2001, I am a 17 year old high school student taking college courses to supplement my light senior year. It was always my habit to flip on the tv for a few minutes to see what was going on in the world before I left for class.

I sat there in horror as the news reports showed the live coverage of the first tower ablaze. When the second plane hit I couldn't believe my eyes. I really thought it was a replay of the first plane hitting again, hoped it was a replay, it wasn't.  I remember thinking life had just shifted and would never truly be the same.

Fast forward to 2014 and a 30 year old me sitting there bawling like a baby over my kindle as I read and relive 9/11.  Images of the twin towers and those planes flashing through my mind all over again and that was just in the first 5% of the book!  You see, just like Fern Taylor the female protagonist in Making Faces, I was from a small school.  I watched 12 of my 31 classmates enlist in the military because it was their patriotic duty.  While that may be where the similarities of my story end with Fern's it was no less powerful and gut wrenching to relive.  Looking back at my goodreads notes I did this a lot while reading this book- I cried,

cried some more

and then flat out ugly cried.

This book was a pure work of masterful genius, my hats off the you Mrs Harmon.

The characters were so well developed and thought out that you really feel them.  You feel the pure and genuine love that Fern has always had for Ambrose.  While he doesn't love her at first, Fern helps Ambrose love himself again so that he can love her.  Ambrose..... Swoon.... He was such an amazing guy.

Nothing felt forced, unreal or insta-love about this story.  The supporting characters are rock solid with trials and tribulations of their own.  You love them just as much as you love Fern and Ambrose. This was a solid stand alone read that haunted me for weeks after I finished it.

I recommend this to anyone and everyone who is looking for a powerfully moving book.  I hope you will give this book a chance and enjoy it as much as I did.

Blog Tour: Surrendered by LP Lovell

Title: Surrendered
Series: She Who Dares #3
Author: LP Lovell
 Release Date: December 29, 2014

I have spent my entire life fighting. Fighting for survival. Fighting my past. Fighting to keep anyone from getting to close. Until him. Theodore Ellis.

He’s my light in the darkness. The only person who makes me truly feel. My most unlikely of saviours. No matter how hard I try, I can’t seem to fight him.

Theo is my vulnerability, the chink in my armour, but he is also my strength. I can’t fight him anymore.

The past only holds as much power as you allow it to. It’s time to tell my story. It’s time to bare my soul, and let Theo in to my dark world. It’s time to take back my power.

Love is a war. She who dares wins.

I’m ready to risk it all. I’m ready to surrender.

This book series has done serious damage on my emotions. They are so many things in this series that make up why I love this book so much. Lilly and Theo’s love story has literally been a battlefield. These two people have waged war against each other and against the world. Love that can survive the trials and tribulations that they two have faced deserves a semblance of a happy ending. But, this happy ending in book such as the She Who Dares series comes with a price.

Surrendered focuses on Lilly and her battles against her mother. She comes from a terribly broken home filled with death and horrendous abuse. Reading about Lilly’s childhood damn near broke me emotionally. She went through so much as a child and deserves the happiness she could potentially have with Theo. But, she must overcome those horrific childhood memories that have come back to haunt her if she even has a chance with happiness with Theo at her side. Lilly’s a good person at heart and it amazes me that she has made it through this life with her past biting at her heels.
Yet, Theo isn’t exempt from the pain and suffering in this book either. He will go the ends of the Earth to protect Lilly and help her brother. This woman has stood beside him even when a colossal one night stand’s mistake falls into their laps. His need to keep her safe will bring into play a whole other slew of issues for them both that could come with deadly consequences.

Surrendered literally left me wanting to present my heart on a platter to LP Lovell. This kind of epic romance story eats away at me every time I pick one up. Yet, this series has stuck with me other the last year and left me in tears after every last page I turn. Be prepared if you choose to embark on Lilly and Theo’s romantic journey to have the Kleenex handy for the tears and a pillow to scream into when these two at times frustrating characters grind you down. Thank you LP for giving me a book series that I have fallen in deep love with. You have made a fan out of me for years to come!

Cover Reveal: Keeping King by Anne Jolin

Author: Anne Jolin
Genre: Erotic Romance
Series: Rock Falls #4

***Can be read as a standalone or as part of the Rock Falls series.***

Peyton Callaghan is a fighter, a survivor, a warrior. When it was kill or be killed, she didn’t hesitate. Now, she’s the only one left standing, haunted by the ghost of a dead man and plagued with the guilt of having taken another person’s life. The upheaval of her life to start over in Rock Falls has been rocky at best, her worst nightmares and wildest desires colliding with each other. Terror tortures her nightly, breeding fear inside her dreams, and in every waking moment, she fights against the lust that threatens to drown her.

Jayden King harbors secrets beneath his outward playboy demeanor. The women who warm his bed lay claim to nothing—you can’t lay claim to someone who doesn’t have a heart. His wit and charm are exquisite means of deflection and distraction from the turmoil roaring inside him. He’s hidden in plain sight, a mask of humor keeping the sadness at bay. The only real reflections of his soul are in the artwork he creates, pieces of him muraled on the skin of others. If tattoo artists could have a calling card, the etch of pain and suffering in each design would be his. Because when the lights go out and the women he’s satisfied have gone home, he’s alone with every fear he refuses to face.

After suffering from a brutal attack at the hands of her roommate’s stalker, Peyton is forced to live with the object of her affection. Without intention, she breathes love into his starved heart, and although the mere thought of that terrifies him, Jayden would burn the city down to keep her safe, causalities be damned.

Some people you have. Some people you hold.

She can have him. She can hold him. But can she keep King? Or is it impossible for Callaghan to keep something that was never really hers to begin with?

Anne Jolin
I’m twenty four years old. I was born and raised in Ladner, a small farm town just outside of Vancouver, Canada. I grew up riding horses, shooting guns and riding in trucks. I’ve been married to my handsome redneck husband for a year and we are parents to our chocolate fur baby, Bear. No kiddo’s yet! I am completely and utterly obsessed with country music, you will constantly find me stalking iTunes. If you don’t find me on iTunes, you’ll find me on Netflix because I am a self proclaimed movie junkie. Yes, that means that I quote them constantly in daily conversation and my characters do too! You couldn’t keep me away from a good action movie if you tried. I’m also a planning nut. I love to plan parties, events, trips – you name it! I don’t know if that’s considered a real hobby, but it is for me.

We were fortunate enough to travel a lot as a family growing up, and I think that helped spark my love of reading. I’m half Viking, my mom is Danish, and her entire side of the family still lives in Denmark. We’d visit them almost once a year, every year and it’s a nine hour flight. That’s a lot of uninterrupted time to read (or in my parent’s case, entertain four children – Yikes!). Somewhere along the way my love of reading, became a love of writing. I wrote short stories when I was younger, and although I majored in Business Management at college, I took as many English electives I could get my hands on.

During the day I work at my family construction company wearing a variety of different hats and at night, I write! I had never thought about writing books before, but after a few suggestions that I should try, I decided to give it a go. I loved it instantly! Having always been a creative person, it felt amazing to harness all that energy and use it to tell a story. Now, quite frankly it’s all I can think about, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m grateful to have developed my love of reading into a passion for writing. You’ll be seeing many more books from me in the future!
